UC TOPS ELMIRA ON SENIOR DAY AT GAETANO STADIUM-MEN’S LACROSSE

Utica, NY (April 19, 2014) – After falling in a 4-0 first quarter hole the Utica College men’s lacrosse team rallied by outscoring visiting Elmira College 15-3 in the next 30 minutes as the Pioneers eventually topped the Soaring Eagles 18-12 in Empire 8 Conference action Saturday at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.

laxUtica junior transfer Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC) registered a career-high seven points on six goals and one assist, while senior Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) recorded a new career-high with six assists in his final game on the turf at Gaetano.  Schoen now has 74 career assists and needs four more to tie the College’s career record for assists, which is currently held by Nate Jobson ’05.

Utica has won three of its last five games and improved to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play.  UC will hit the road for its final two regular season games, beginning with a trip to St. John Fisher College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Elmira’s record fell to 2-10 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy) tallied six points on three goals and three assists, while senior Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy) added three goals on senior day for Utica.  Ross Cree (Akwesasne/Salmon River ) added two goals and one assist for the Pioneers and senior TJ Benson (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) also found the back of the net twice. 

lax Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) picked up a career-high 12 ground balls and won a career-high 18 face-offs, while senior Bryan Habick (Brielle, N.J./Bellarmine University) netted his first career goal in his final home game in the blue and orange.

Utica entered the second quarter trailing 4-0 before rattling off eight of the game’s next 10 goals to take an 8-6 lead at the half.  Reiller scored four goals in the second quarter alone, while Cree netted two to lead the Pioneer charge.

UC scored nine straight goals between the second and third quarters to take a convincing 13-6 lead with 5:05 left in the third.  The home team opened the third quarter with five straight goals, including two from Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy), to take a seven goal lead late in the quarter. Schoen assisted on four straight goals in the stretch.

Elmira outscored UC 5-3 in the final 15 minutes but it proved to be too late as the Pioneers came away with the conference victory.

laxJunior defender Tom Byrne (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) registered eight ground balls and caused three turnovers for UC, while junior goalie Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) added seven saves in the victory.  Senior goalie Cory Spisak (Lisle, NY/Tompkins Cortland CC) came on in relief and stopped 10 shots.

Utica won 24-of-32 face-offs on the afternoon and outshot the visitors 47-38.  The Pioneers also won the ground ball battle, 35-14. Elmira finished with four man-up goals.

The Soaring Eagles were led by three goals and one assist from freshman David Evert.  Senior Jackson Correia added three goals and classmate Brady Richards tallied one goal and two assists. Elmira freshman Myles Richards — a 6-foot-6 285-pound attack man — added two goals, as did freshman Anthony LaRusso. Freshman goalie Cameron Prior stopped 13 shots in net for the visitors.

UC DOWN’S ALFRED IN MEN’S LAX ACTION

Box Score Alfred, NY (4/12/14)- The Utica College men’s lacrosse team got back on track Saturday as it downed Alfred University 9-4 in Empire 8 Conference action.  JuniorChristian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC) led all players with four points on the day. 
 
laxThe Pioneers improve to 6-6 on the year and 2-2 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Alfred drops to 4-6 and 1-3 in the E8. 
 
The game started off slowly as Alfred controlled a 4-2 lead at halftime.  The Pioneers then exploded for seven goals in the second half, including five in the fourth quarter to down the Saxons. 

Reiller scored three goals and added one assist.  He now leads the team with 21 goals and 31 points.  Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy)and David Craig (Brewerton, NY/Paul V. Moore) each had one goal and one assist, while Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy)Corey Thompson(Akwesasne/Salmon River)TJ Benson (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore), and Andrew Jamieson (Six Nations, ON/Hagersville) also scored for UC. 

laxFreshman Ross Cree(Akwesasne/Salmon River ) had two assists and Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) made seven saves for his fourth win of the season. 
 
With three assists on the day, senior captain Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) surpassed his older brother Steve Schoen ’07 for second place on the college’s career assist list.  

Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) now has 68 career assists, ten behind career leader Nate Jobson ’05.  Schoen also became just the seventh player in program history to record 100 or more career points. 
 
The Pioneers return to action Wednesday as they host Empire 8 rival Stevens Institute of Technology.  Game time is set for 4 p.m.

UC MEN’S LAX BACK ON TRACK WITH SATURDAY WIN

Dallas, PA (April 5, 2014) – The Utica College men’s lacrosse team combined to outscore host Misericordia 8-3 between the second and third quarters on its way to a 10-7 victory in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.

laxThree different Pioneers scored two goals including seniors Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Scott Baron(Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy), as well as sophomore Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy).  Schoen also added an assist to help the Pioneers snap a three game slide as they improved to 5-5 overall on the season. 

The Pioneers trailed 3-2 with 3:41 to go in the first half before exploding with seven of the game’s next eight goals to gain a convincing 9-4 advantage with 8:56 to go in the fourth quarter. 

Misericordia (4-6) scored three goals in the final 8:22 of the contest to put a scare into the Pioneers, but the comeback bid proved to be too late as UC came away with the 10-7 victory in regulation.

laxWith the score knotted at 3-3 late in the second quarter, Baron netted his second goal of the day with just eight ticks left on the first half clock to give the Pioneers a 4-3 lead at the half. 

Utica faceoff man Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) gave UC a two goal lead, 5-3, when he scored just 45 seconds into the second half and then the Pioneers rattled off three straight man-up goals in a span of 3:13 in the third quarter to push their lead to 8-4. 

Freshman Ross Cree (Akwesasne/Salmon River ) netted one goal and added one assist for the Pioneers, while Liam Wheatley (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) added the Pioneers final goal of the game, his second of the season, midway through the fourth quarter to seal the victory. 

laxStevenson and long stick defender Tom Byrne (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) each scooped up a game-high seven ground balls, while senior goalie Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) stopped 12 shots in the victory for Utica.

Corey Thompson (Akwesasne/Salmon River) also chipped in with four ground balls for the visitors as the Pioneers earned a 36-27 advantage in the ground ball category.  UC outshot the Cougars 43-32 to spoil senior day at Mangelsdorf Field.

Junior Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC) netted one goal for Utica and remains in the team lead with 26 points this season (17 goals, nine assists). SeniorJoe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) now has 63 career assists and needs just two more to tie his older brother Steve Schoen ’07 for second on the College’s all-time list. 

The Pioneers continue their three game road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Empire 8 Conference rival and nationally-ranked No. 11 Ithaca College to take on the Bombers at 4 p.m.

BIG 4TH QUARTER LEADS UTICA TO A 10-7 WIN OVER HARTWICK IN E-8 ACTION

Box Score Utica, NY (3/22/14)- The Utica College men’s lacrosse team used five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter for a 10-7 come-from-behind victory over Hartwick College in Empire 8 action Saturday afternoon.  Eight different players scored for UC.

laxHartwick jumped out to a two-goal lead, however goals by Adam Zielenski (Holland Patent, NY/Mohawk Valley CC) and Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy) knotted the score after the first fifteen minutes.  The Hawks pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 5-3 in the quarter to own a 7-5 lead at halftime.

Both teams played an even third quarter, as neither scored a goal, before UC turned up the pressure and netted five straight in the final frame to cruise to victory.  Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC) and Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) each tallied two goals in the final 15 minutes, while freshman Ross Cree(Akwesasne/Salmon River ) also scored to give Utica the 10-7 advantage.

Hartwick threatened in the final 1:41 as UC was assessed three penalties, giving the Hawks a huge three-man advantage.  The Pioneer defense held strong, however as Hartwick was not able to register a shot on goal in the man up opportunity leading Utica to its fourth win and first conference victory of the season.

laxAndrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) had six saves in the win, while his counterpart, Michael Rourke had 20 saves in the loss.  Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) had an impressive day for UC, netting one goal and winning 13-of-20 face offs as well as collecting seven ground balls.  Tom Byrne (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) also played well for the Pioneers as he also scooped up seven ground balls and caused three turnovers.  Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy) and Corey Thompson(Akwesasne/Salmon River) also scored for Utica.

The Pioneers (4-2, 1-0 Empire 8) return to action Wednesday as they travel to SUNY Potsdam for a non-conference match up.  Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.

PIONEERS DOWN CASTLETON IN MEN’S LACROSSE ACTION

Utica, NY (3/19/14)- The Utica College men’s lacrosse team got balaxck on track Wednesday as it downed visiting Castleton State 14-9 in non-conference action.  Senior TJ Benson (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) led the Pioneers with three goals on the day. 

Utica got on the board just over five and a half minutes into the game as Benson netted his fifth of the season, assisted by Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC)

Castleton evened the score just over a minute later, but Benson struck again at 6:31 to regain the Utica lead.  Just over two minutes later, Reiller connected with freshmanRoss Cree (Akwesasne/Salmon River ) for his eighth of the year. 

laxCastleton fought back in the second quarter, netting two goals to once again tie the game, however Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro)‘s first of the year with 48 seconds left in the half sent Utica into halftime with a 4-3 lead. 

The Pioneers outscored the Spartans 10-6 in the second half to seal their third victory of the year.  Reiller and Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy) each finished with two goals and one assist, and Cree also tallied three points (one goal, two assists) on the day. 

 Corey Thompson (Akwesasne/Salmon River) had a goal and an assist, while Andrew Jamieson (Six Nations, ON/Hagersville)Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge)Liam Wheatley (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder), and Adam Zielenski (Holland Patent, NY/Mohawk Valley CC) each found the back of the net once.  Senior Cory Spisak (Lisle, NY/Tompkins Cortland CC) had 11 saves for his second win of the year, while Peter Latulippe and Sam Polas combined for 14 saves for Castleton.

UC improves to 3-2 on the year, while the Spartans drop to 1-3.  The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they open up Empire 8 Conference play against Hartwick College.  Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
