As temperatures finally fell low enough to feel like Autumn, the Oriskany Lady Redskins and the Hamilton Lady Emerald Knights squared off in the first round of the Girl’s Class “D” playoffs.
The home team, Lady Redskins, got two goals in the first fifteen minutes of the contest and hung on for a thrilling 2-1 win.
After surviving today’s first round contest, 7th seeded Oriskany (9-6-1) advances to take on number 2 seed and defending New York State Champion Poland (14-2) on Thursday at Poland.
Oriskany started out fast and furious in this one, applying relentless pressure in the Hamilton zone. The Hamilton defense was put on its heels early.
The visitors, on the other hand, were not able to mount any offensive threat whatsoever in the first forty minutes of play.
A big part of Hamilton’s lack of firepower, early, was likely due to the absence of Hayden Nolan, who was lost to injury, for the remainder of the season during last Saturday’s regular season finale, a 1-1 overtime tie with Morrisville-Eaton.
The Emerald Knights entered sectionals coming off a up and down October with a 3-4-1 record. Oriskany carried a 3-2, October record into today’s home match.
Just 5:29 into the first half, Oriskany junior forward Jordan Sahl took a pass from front line mate Madison Zizzy just inside the midfield stripe.
Sahl then took the ball all the way in on the Hamilton goal and nailed a low shot past Hamilton keeper Isadore “Issie” Schaller to give the home club a quick 1-0 lead.
Already up 1-0, Oriskany got what would be the game winner with 25:56 to go in the first half.
Taylor Watson found herself alone in front with Hamilton keeper Issie Schaller, after Schaller deflected a shot from Oriskany’s Alexus Koons. Watson knocked home the rebound to put Oriskany up 2-0.
Hamilton managed just one shot in the first half, while Oriskany peppered Schaller with seven in the first forty minutes.
Hamilton seemed to come alive in the second half, generating significantly more opportunities in the offensive zone.
Finally, with 18:31 remaining in regular time, Knights senior Clara Jones hit an absolutely beautiful in swinger off a corner kick, which sailed over the outstretched arms of Oriskany keeper Breanna Bouska, just under the cross bar and into the net, pulling Hamilton to within 2-1.
Hamilton had the exact same opportunity, as the final seconds ticked off the clock in the second half, but Jones’ shot went wide of the net, preserving the win for Oriskany.
Breanna Bouska was tested in the second half, stopping 4 of the 5 shots from Hamilton.
Hamilton ends its season at (6-9-1).
The Lady Redskins now have the unenviable task of taking on the State’s #1 ranked team, Poland, on Thursday.
The Lady Tornadoes have beaten Oriskany in the two previous meetings this season.
