The 2014 My Hometown Sports Summer Fun Tour made a familiar and favorite stop this afternoon, dropping in at Kost Fields in Rome, for the 9th Annual Rosemary Sharlow Memorial Softball Tournament.
Beginning Friday night and running through Sunday afternoon, The Rome Girls Softball Association is playing host to 16 travel softball teams, 10 in the 14U Division and 6 in the 12U division, all competing for tournament championship honors.
Organizations involved in this year’s event included the Rome Knights, Utica Hurricanes, Central Spirit, Mohawk Valley Vipers, Utica Lady Sluggers, Jamesville- DeWitt Big Red, Adirondack, CNY Heat, Camillus, Liverpool Blue Reign and Horseheads Blue Heat.
My Hometown Sports caught the game between the JD Big Red 14u and the Rome Lady Knights and it was the Romans who came out on top, 6-4, to improve to (2-0) in tournament action so far. Jamesville-DeWitt dropped to (1-1).
The Knights got a complete game performance from pitcher, Olivia Deraway, who earned her second victory in as many days for Rome.
Deraway allowed just one hit in the six inning contest, striking out 10 and walking 4 for the victory.
Rome jumped out early in the top of the first inning, when Bri Laureti singled and later scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Deraway, giving the Knights a quick 1-0 lead after half a frame.
The Lady Knights increased their lead to 5-0 in the top of the second, when Erin Reilly was hit by a pitch, Lexi Shulz drew a walk to start things off.
A pair of RBI singles by Kylie Cheseboro and Molly Closivski scored Reilly and Shulz to make it 2-0, with runners at the corners and nobody out.
Bri Laureti reached on an infield error that scored Cheseboro to make it 3-0, with runners at the corners and one away.
Hannah Begay then reached on another Big Red error, which scored Closivski and quickly it was 4-0, in favor of the Romans.
The Knights fifth run came on an RBI single from Deraway, scoring Laureti, to make it 5-0 headed to the bottom of the second.
A couple of walks and an infield error in the bottom of the frame allowed Big Red’s Bridget O’hern and Shana Mysh to score, pulling J-D to within 5-2 after two innings of play.
The game remained 5-2 until the top half of the sixth inning, when Bri Laureti started things off with a long triple to left field.
Hannah Begay followed up with a sharp RBI single, scoring Laureti, to make it 6-2 Rome, which is the way we’d go to the bottom of the sixth.
Jamesville-DeWitt rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it was too little too late, as the Knights rolled to their second win in as many starts, by a final score of 6-4.
Kylie Cheseboro led the Rome offense today with two hits and a run scored.
The Lady Knights will look to take home the 14u crown as they return to action on Sunday morning.
Play continues at Kost Fields through Sunday afternoon, when champions will be crowned in both age groups.
