Sophomore Kyle Cronin scored two goals, including the game winner and fellow sophomore, Tyler Hansen made 32 saves, leading the New Hartford Spartans to a 3-2 Section III, Division II, National Conference win over Oswego, tonight at the New Hartford Recreation Center.
Cronin’s two goal performance and game winning goal earned him the MHTS/Monster Energy Drink Player of the game.
Netminder, Tyler Hansen also deserves recognition for his great job in between the pipes for the Spartans.
With the win, the Spartans (3-1, 5-1) take sole possession of first place in the National Conference, two points ahead of second place Clinton.
After a scoreless opening period, Oswego head coach Andy Rozak told ESPN Radio 99.1 FM that he was pleased with his team’s first period effort, especially that of his goaltender, Donovan Roy, who had 13 saves in the opening stanza.
The visiting Buccaneers got on the board first in this one. With Oswego skating a man down for the first :56 of the second period, Zach Zerrahn tucked a puck from the side of the net, behind New Hartford goaltender Tyler Hansen, to give Oswego a 1-0 lead, with 14:20 to go in the second period.
The Spartans evened things up at 1-1, with 12:40 to go in the second when Kyle Cronin beat Bucs goaltender Donovan Roy with a quick wrist shot from in close.
A little more than five minutes later, in a very tightly officiated second period, New Hartford’s Jack Burns lit the lamp to make it 2-1 in favor of the Spartans. Justin Rockwell picked up the assist on New Hartford’s second goal.
The two teams went to the second intermission separated by one goal, with the Spartans on top 2-1. During the second intermission, Spartans Head Coach John Cunningham told ESPN 99.1 FM that he believed the game was loosening up for both teams and the second period’s physical play was a sign that both teams were waking up and getting after it.
New Hartford jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the third period, on a breakaway goal from Kyle Cronin, who beat Donovan Roy to the stick side, for his second goal of the game. The Spartans third goal of the game came with 10:16 to go in the game.
The next several minutes saw the Buccaneers reel off several quality shots on the Spartans net, but Tyler Hansen was up to the task, keeping New Hartford’s lead at two goals.
Oswego did pull to within one goal with 2:47 to go in the contest, when Brandon Tracz rifled a long shot past Hansen to make it 3-2, which is the way this one would come to an end.
Buc’s netminder Donavan Roy, went the distance and made 35 saves for the visitors. In net.
The Spartans have a hectic schedule before the Christmas break, traveling to Ithaca for a non-league game on Friday, before returning home for a league contest with Ontario Bay on Monday, 12/23.
