On a night when the lights shined bright at Greenman Estates softball field across from Utica College, fans of two local, high school, girls softball teams got a chance to see their teams take center stage for a key Center States Division 3 matchup. More importantly, they got a chance to see and feel what community, caring and giving are all about.

Despite inclement weather, which is nothing new around here, despite a last minute change in venue, it was all systems go, as the Sauquoit Lady Indians hosted a game that was, on this night, a lot more than just a game.

Sauquoit took on Waterville in softball in the “Light the Night” charity, softball game, a fundraiser for the scholarship program.

Proceeds from concessions and raffles, during the game, will be used to benefit the Felix S. Cardillo Jr. Scholarship at Sauquoit Valley High School.

Cardillo, who passed away last August, was dedicated to his family, community and loved athletics. Felix’s widow and Brianne’s mother, Dianne, threw out the first pitch of the game.

On the field it was all Indians as Sauquoit improved to (3-4-3-1) with the win.

Brianne Cardillo and Jenna Mazza both had home runs and Shania Taylor pitched a complete game as Sauquoit broke open a close game, scoring eight runs in the middle innings and banging out 17 hits on a chilly night.

The visitors from Waterville jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a great top of the first inning. The problem for the visitors was the fact that Sauquoit didn’t flinch and answered with a five run outburst of their own in the home half of the first.

Waterville scored all six of its runs in the first three frames and  Indians starter, Shania Taylor, settled down and silenced the other Indians’ bats the rest of the way. Taylor  went the distance, striking out 7 and scattering 7 hits to get the win.
