MVCC offers one of the most extensive, diverse, and successful two-year college intercollegiate athletic programs in the entire country.
MVCC prides itself on the overall depth and well-roundedness of its entire athletic program. There is a wide variety of individual (12) and team (10) sports for men and women.
The diversity of the program (11 sports for men and 11 for women) virtually assures any interested student that there is the opportunity to participate in the sport of their interest at MVCC.
The majority of the coaching staff are full time employees of the college and are here to help each athlete grow and develop both in skill and as an individual.
The entire college community is excited by the achievements of our athletes sending many teams and individuals to regional and national competitions and triumphs.
2014 Fall Season Student Athletes of the Week:
Anthonae Sheard has been a dominating force at the net this season for the Hawks’ volleyball squad. During last week’s action, she was deadly with 28 kills while going up for seven blocks. This performance earned her the honor of being named MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 4.
Sheard’s performance paced the Hawks to a 3-1 victory over Hudson Valley Community College by the scores of 26-24, 25-21, 25-27, and 26-24.
On the defensive side of the net, Sheard made 30 digs and delivered six blistering shots for aces from the service line.
Sheard is a freshman and graduate of Hudson High School. She is a General Studies major
Once again, the men’s cross country team at MVCC islooking strong heading into the second half of the season. Consistently leading the Hawks this year has been sophomore Todd Stevens. Last week he won the SUNY Poly Wildcat Weekend Class 8-kilometer race, which has earned him the honor of being named MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 28.
The winning time of 27 minutes, 44 seconds was a personal best for Stevens. His performance was the leading edge to the Hawks finishing second as a team.
In an earlier meet, Stevens placed third at the Bruce Bridgeman Invitational at Finger Lakes Community College with a time of 28:58.6. At the SUNY Oswego Cross Country Invitational, he was 33rd while competing against more than a dozen four-year colleges. His time was 26:50.8.
Stevens is a sophomore matriculated in Nursing, who graduated from Holland Patent High School.
Chris Hanifin, Men’s Soccer
The MVCC men’s soccer team is rolling through the regional competition as the Hawks build momentum toward a shot at a national title. The key player for the Hawks has been goalkeeper Chris Hanifin, who has allowed only five goals in 12 games.
For his performance between the pipes, Hanifin has been named MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 20, 2014.
As the Hawks seek to extend their 10-game winning streak, Hanifin has recorded five consecutive shutouts. During this stretch, he has recorded 16 saves while the Hawks’ offense has scored 24 goals on 60 shots against the opposition.
This Fort Plain native’s save percentage is .902 as he has allowed only five goals
New Hartford’s Stephanie Boucher named MVCC Athlete of the Week
As the Mohawk Valley Community College women’s cross country team heads into mid-September, a powerful runner is once again leading the Hawks.
Stephanie Boucher returns for her second year at MVCC and has stepped up her performances in the third meets the Hawks have compete in. This past Saturday, she took first place at the Bruce Bridgeman Invitational at Finger Lakes Community College. Her performance has earned her the honor of being named MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 14.
Boucher has been a standout for the Hawks, including winning the NJCAA crown in the 1,500-meter run in 5:03.29 this past spring. This fall, she opened the season by placing 13th at the SUNY IT Invitational in 21:43 and then came back seven days later to take 28th place at the SUNY Oswego Invitational. At both of these races, she was competing against four-year scholarship colleges. At SUNY Oswego, she cut her time to 19:55.6.
This past Saturday, it may have been thought she was slowed slightly by the 50-degree temperatures and rainy conditions, but you wouldn’t know it as she won in a time of 20:17.5.
Boucher is a Liberal Arts major who graduated from New Hartford High School.
When the MVCC women’s soccer team finished second in the nation last year, there were questions around the ability of the Hawks to replace their key senior players they were losing. That question has been answered and put to rest with the arrival of freshman Jenelle Dillenbeck.
As the Hawks enter the third week of the season undefeated, it has been the exquisite performance of Dillenbeck, which has raised the performance of the Hawks to another level. For her performance, she has been named MVCC’s Player of the Week.
In just five games, Dillenbeck has scored 12 goals and assisted on another. In Sunday’s 14-0 victory over Jamestown Community College (Cattaraugus Campus), Dillenbeck scored an amazing five goals. This performance coming just one day after scoring both of the Hawks’ goals in the 2-1 victory over NJCAA Division III Genesee Community College.
“She is very physical and tenacious to the goal,” said MVCC head coach Steve Senior. “Her speed allows her to get that extra step on the opposition’s defense.”
A native of Canajoharie, Dillenbeck scored 42 goals during her senior year in high school and was a Class C first-team all-state selection while leading the Cougars to their first soccer sectional title.
Dillenbeck, who is a general study major, is leading the nation in scoring.
2014 Spring Season Student Athlete Of The Week
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 5/4/14 is Alex Vujanic. Alex won the Region III Tennis Championship in both 1st Singles and 1st Doubles. He has qualified for the NJCAA Division III Championships to be held in Plano Texas. Mr. Vujanic is a sophomore Electrical Technology major who graduated from Proctor High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 4/20/14 is Stephanie Boucher. Stephanie broke the school record for the 800m on two separate occasions last week. Her time of 2:15.51 ranks her number one in the NJCAA Division III. Miss Boucher is a freshman Liberal Arts major who graduated from New Hartford High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 4/13/14 is Alex McLean. The Hawks starting First Baseman/Designated Hitter slugged his way to a .476 average going 10 for 21 at the plate scoring 9 runs with 1 double, 1 homerun and 5 RBI’s in 8 games. The Petrolia, Ontario Canada native is a sophomore General Studies major.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 4/6/14 is Julianna Rose. Julianna led the Softball Team to a 2-1 victory in 10 innings over Nationally Ranked #1 Herkimer College. Juliana pitched all 10 innings scattering 10 hits and walking only 1 batter. The freshman Individual Studies major is a graduate of Utica-Notre Dame High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 3/23/14 is Matt Thompson. Matt led the baseball team to four victories on their annual spring trip to the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach SC. The freshman first baseman hit for a .345 average with 4 doubles and 7 RBI’s in 8 games. The freshman Liberal Arts major is a graduate of Corcoran High School.
2013-14 Winter Season Student Athlete Of The Week
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 3/9/14 is Jordan Calhoun. Jordan led the Men’s Bowling Team to a 4th place finish at the NJCAA National Championships. His series of: 548, 550, 608, 645 for a total pin fall of 2,351 established him as an NJCAA All-American. The Sophomore Public Policy major is a graduate of Whitesboro High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 3/2/14 is Lamel Faison. Lamel helped lead the Hawks Basketball Team to the Region III Final Four.
He scored 12 points including two big three point baskets to rally the Hawks from behind to force overtime in a one point loss.
MVCC finished the season by winning 11 out of 13 games after he took over at point guard. The freshman Liberal Arts major is a graduate of Xaverian High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 2/23/14 is Justin Shaver. Justin won the Region III Championship in the Weight Throw with a mark of 51’2 1/4”. His throw also qualified him for the NJCAA Indoor Track Championships. Mr. Shaver is a Carpentry and Masonry major who graduated from Honeoye High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 2/16/14 is Stephanie Boucher. Stephanie broke the school record in the 600m with a time of 1:38.15. The freshman Liberal Arts major has qualified for the Indoor Track Nationals in the 600m, 800m and 1,000m. Miss Boucher is a graduate of New Hartford High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 2/9/14 is Phil Carr. Phil helped lead the Hawks Basketball Team to two victories last week. Mr. Carr averaged 20 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks in the two games. He has been a dominant force for the Hawks during the second semester of play. The freshman Liberal Arts major graduated from Transit Tech High School in Brooklyn, NY.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 2/2/14 is Brian Payne. Brian won the 400m race at the Brockport Invitational in a personal record time of 51.63. He set a meet record with his win. The freshman Criminal Justice major graduated from Inderkum High School in Sacramento, CA.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 1/26/14 is Stephanie Boucher. Stephanie qualified for the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships to be held at the Armory in New York City. The freshman ran the 800m in a personal best time of 2:22.19. Miss Boucher is a Liberal Arts major who graduated from New Hartford High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 1/19/14 is Tyquan Rolon. Tyquan scored 21 points against Fulton Montgomery and 13 in a big win over Nationally Ranked #4 SUNY Delhi. The freshman General Studies major is averaging 13.6ppg and is shooting 53% from the field for the Nationally Ranked #9 Hawks. Mr. Rolon is a graduate of Nottingham High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 12/15/13 is Shakirra Smith. Shakirra averaged 14.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.3 steals in 3 games. Miss Smith has helped lead the Hawks to a record of 12-3 at the semester break and a #4 National Ranking. The sophomore General Studies major is from Queens, NY.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 12/8/13 is Shaquille Mosley. Shaquille helped lead the Hawks Basketball Team to 3 victories last week extending the team’s win streak to 7 games. Mr. Mosley averaged 19.3 points per game and he had a high assist total of 10 in a win over SUNY Adirondack. Mr. Mosley is a freshman Liberal Arts major who graduated from Uniondale High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 11/25/13 is Matt Thompson. Matt helped lead the Hockey Team to two wins in three games last week. The freshman tallied 5 goals and 4 assists for the Hawks. Mr. Thompson is a freshman General Studies major who graduated from Corcoran High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 11/17/13 is Shelby Kralik. Shelby recorded 10-3 point baskets while shooting 48% from the field in leading the Hawks to two victories. Miss Kralik is averaging 10 points and 4 rebounds per game. The freshman Engineering Science major graduated from Queens High School in Kingston, Ontario Canada.
2013 Fall Season Student Athlete of The Week
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 11/10/13 is Jordan Case. The freshman defender helped lead the Women’s Soccer Team to a second place finish at the NJCAA National Championships. She scored two goals in the last 20 minutes of the Championship game against Brookdale CC in one of the most exciting finals in recent years. Miss Case is a graduate of Whitesboro High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 11/3/13 is Lazaro Martinez. Laz led the Men’s Basketball Team to the Championship of the Anthony Torchia Memorial Basketball Tournament. The sophomore Liberal Arts major averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds in the two victories. Mr. Martinez is a graduate of Wadleigh High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 10/27/13 is Meghan Carlo. Meghan helped lead the Women’s Soccer Team to the Region III Championship. She scored the lone MVCC goal as well as converting a penalty kick in the 3-2 PK victory over Finger Lakes CC. The Sophomore Engineering Science major is a graduate of Oriskany High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 10/20/13 is Matt Brooks. Matt won the Conference Championship while leading the Men to a team title. The sophomore Liberal Arts major is undefeated against junior college runners this fall. Mr. Brooks is from Utica, NY.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 10/13/13 is Andrea Szewcyzk. Andrea set a personal record at the Hamilton Cross Country Invite with a time of 19:45. She has helped lead the Women’s Cross Country Team to a #1 National Ranking. Miss Szewcyzk is a Sophomore Liberal Arts major who graduated from Ilion High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 10/6/13 is Vanessa Jecko. Miss Jecko is a two year starter in goal for the Hawks. Last week Vanessa shut out Bryant and Stratton College and helped lead the team to a 3-1 victory over Nationally ranked #1 Broome CC. The sophomore General Studies major is a graduate of Sauquoit High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 9/29/13 is Nicole Burline. Nicole once again controlled the middle of the field in leading the Hawks to two victories last week. MVCC is 9-2 overall and a perfect 9-0 in Region III play. Miss Burline is a sophomore defender who graduated from Sauquoit High School. She is a Chemistry major who has attained a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 9/1/13 is Silvana Giovannone. Silvana scored all four goals for the Women’s Soccer Team in a 4-2 win over Onondaga CC. Miss Giovannone is a sophomore Liberal Arts Major who graduated from Scotia-Glenville High School.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 9/15/13 is Matt Brooks.Matt led the Hawk Cross Country Team to a victory at the Finger Lakes CC Invitational. The sophomore Liberal Arts major was the individual champion with a time of 28:52 for the 5 mile course. Mr. Brooks is a native of Utica, NY.
The MVCC Athlete of the Week for the week ending 9/22/13 is Chris Hanifin. Chris helped lead the Men’s Soccer Team to two victories last week.
The freshman Goalkeeper posted back to back shutouts for the Hawks. He has 59 saves in 10 games this season. Mr. Hanifin is a General Studies major who graduated from Fort Plain High School.
