LOCAL SHOOTERS LEAD SPRING BREAK SHOOTOUT

Utica, NY (3-18-12) – The Utica College men’s golf team wrapped up its springVbreak trip on Thursday at Farmstead Golf Links in Calabash, North Carolina.  Local natives, juniors Patrick Dundon and John Gaspa of Whitesboro, NY and freshman shooter Christian Leogrande of New Hartford, NY led the Pioneers throughout the week as the squad challenged six courses in six days in the Myrtle Beach area.

Patrick Dundon struck a career and team-best 81 at Prestwick Country Club

UC placed fourth in a four-way exhibition shootout on Wednesday at River Hills Country Club carding a team score of 347.  Dundon led the way with a career-best 81 while Gaspa struck an 84 for second and Leogrande followed in third with an 85.  Dundon and Gaspa both followed up with an 84 on the final day while Leogrande shaved three strokes a day to conclude his final three rounds with an 88, 85 and 82.

Local new additions, freshman Adam Vella of Utica, NY and sophomore Benton Ketron, of nearby Ilion, NY took the course for the first time as Pioneers this past week and improved considerably throughout the week. As a week goal of both to break triple digits, Vella finished fourth in the match on Wednesday with a 97, totaling his lowest round of the week while Ketron shaved over 14 strokes from day one to card a 102 on the final day at Farmstead. Farmstead’s signature hole falls on 18 and is a distinguished a 767 yard par 6.

The Pioneers return to action Saturday April, 7 as the host of the UC Spring Invitational at Kanon Valley Country in Oneida, NY. The field will consist of Ithaca College, Hobart College, Scranton University, St. Lawrence University, and SUNY ESF. Tee times are to be announced.
