MVCC’s Vanessa Jecko of Sauquoit, (4) puts the tag on Herkimer’s Delaney Buckley (11) of Utica. Buckley was in there with a double.
Herkimer, would get revenge in game two cruising to a 10-2 win in the nightcap.
With one away and the bases loaded in the home half of the tenth inning, Brooke Pominville chopped a ball back to Herkimer pitcher Alyssa LaLonde, who tossed it to catcher Sammy Smaldone for a force out at home.
Smaldone then fired toward first base for the double play, but the ball ended up in right field, allowing New Hartford grad Mikelle Deck to score from second base, giving MVCC the come from behind 2-1 victory.
Herkimer, the 2013 National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Champions, took the lead in the top half of the second, when Oriskany alum Alyssa Balfe knocked a one out sacrifice fly to center field to score Kat Dolly.
Herkimer would hold a 1-0 advantage all the way to the bottom of the seventh inning, as Lady Generals pitcher Alyssa LaLonde and MVCC dealer Julianna Rose were hitting their respective spots and held both offenses in check.
The Generals entered today’s contest with a record of (7-3), including a 3-0 win over MVCC back on March 18th in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, hit the ball hard all afternoon, but the MVCC defense was up to the task time and time again.
In the bottom of the seventh, and MVCC trailing 1-0, Hawks catcher Brianna Georgia led off with a long double down the right field line to give the home club a runner in scoring position.
New York Mills graduate Corinne Flihan then stepped in and ripped a line drive to left center, scoring Georgia to tie the game at 1-1.
Flihan was called out at second as she tried to stretch her hit to a double. The Hawks were unable to plate another run in the seventh, so it was time for free softball.
The teams would remain scoreless until the 10th inning, when the NJCAA tie breaker rule went into effect, meaning each team would start the inning with a runner at second with nobody out.
Herkimer was unable to plate a run in the top of the 10th, opening the door for MVCC in the bottom half of the inning.
Flihan was placed at second and reached third on an infield hit, but was called out at home on Pominville’s chopper back to the pitcher.
Mikelle Deck then wheeled around from second base on Smaldone’s throwing error and the Lady Hawks got the dramatic extra inning win.
The win improves MVCC to (2-6) on the season, but gives the Lady Hawks a (1-0) record in the Region III standings. Herkimer dropped to (7-4), (0-1) in Region III.
