( We got to speak with men's coach Matt St. Croix, Athletic Director, Gary Broadhurst and women's basketball coach Jason Carpenter.)
MHTS Game story:
Is was, indeed, a Hawks athletic nation celebration on Saturday at the Robert R. Jorgensen Athletics/Events Center on the Campus of Mohawk Valley Community College.
A celebration of current and future Hawks. Today the school hosted its “Fifth Annual Student Athlete Open House”. An open house at the new house! What a day it was.
MHTS and ESPN Radio Utica/Rome tagged along to broadcast the men's basketball game as the Hawks hosted the Vikings of Hudson Valley Community College.
Rude hosts they were, as the home team rolled to an impressive 90-54, conference win, to extract some revenge for an earlier season loss during a downstate visit by MVCC.
Prior to our game, broadcast on ESPN, we had a chance to chat with longtime Athletic Director Gary Broadhurst about the current state of the MVCC athletic program and of course about the new Jorgensen Center.
Men's hoops coach Matt St. Croix also joined us on the air as did women's head coach Jason Carpenter.
Our good friend and MVCC Baseball Coach Dave Warren was off doing what he does best, recruit baseball players!
Parents and athletes converged on the local campus to tour the school and visit with members of the faculty and athletic department staff.
The day was a huge success and those in attendance got to see just how good this Hawks program is.
Coach Matt St. Croix and company entered today's tilt with the visiting Vikings with a 16-4 record and a hungry bunch of Hawks ready to impress our radio audience.
Impress they did. Using a stifling pressure defense and up tempo offense, the home team put on quite a show.
It was close early, but it was over early, in the second half, as MV (17-4) blew the doors off the stunned Vikings (17-8).
Remington Glenn, who averages just over 15 points per game, was up to his old tricks again as he posted 18 points to lead the Hawks and threw down 14 of those 18 points after intermission
The high flying birds soared past the Vikes, outscoring them, 57-25, in the second half of play.
The 90 points scored by MVCC was well above the average of 76 that the Hawks normally put up and the big gaudy numbers will force future opponents to take notice of the Hawks, down the stretch.
Glenn led a well balanced offensive attack and was helped out by teammates Clint Wilson, who scored 15 points, Zach Coleman 13 and Jachin Ingram who contributed 11 points of his own.
The Vikings, who spent most to the second half looking back as Hawks whizzed past them, were led by Kalik Parker, a smooth shooting, forward who scored 15 and Conor Maisch who added 13 for the visitors.
This one was close for the opening twenty minutes, as both teams took turns posting impressive runs on offense.
We were tied at 11 when Devin Pinnock hit from the field to ignite an 8-0 Hawks run, to push the lead to 19-11, with ten minutes left in the first half.
Conor Maisch and Kalik Parker put up a quick five points for the Vikings, as the lead was down to just three, 19-16, with seven minutes until halftime.
Hudson Valley enjoyed its biggest lead of the game, 24-19, as Maisch scored again, off glass, with 5:23 left in the first twenty.
Two free throws by Clint Wilson put the Hawks back up 25-24.
We were tied at 29-29 after a Kalik Parker 3 ball. Corey Favors gave the Hawks the lead back for good, 30-29, with a free throw. The hosts led 33-29 at the break and never looked back.
It was an 11 point lead as Remington Glenn bulled his way to 6 quick points and MV was suddenly up, 40-29.
It got late, early, as the lead swelled to 20, 57-37, when Clint Wilson scored again.
A long range three by Clint Holmes, from the top of the key, made Vikings fans flinch as the lead was out of hand at 67-41.
The relentless attack continued until the Hawks got to celebrate their well deserved 90-54 victory and set the stage for the women's game that would follow.
It was time for the Vikings to start up the bus and head home to regroup.
It was time for the Hawks to soar their way to a 17-4 record and get set for three more games at home as SUNY Dehli, Schenectady CCC and Clinton CC head to town to tangle with the Hawks.
Thanks for the invitation extended to MHTS and ESPN Radio. We had a ball, as did all of those who attended the Fifth Annual Athletic Department Open House. See you next year.
