FATHER’S DAY MATINEE-WHITESTOWN KNOCKS OFF NEW HARTFORD 3-2-AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL
Whitestown Second Baseman Adam Pexton (8) turns a third inning double play as New Hartford’s Ben Phelps (6) slides into him.
Defending NYS District V Champion Whitestown Post 1113 scored three runs in the home half of the fifth inning, erasing a two run New Hartford lead and hung on for a 3-2 league win this morning at SUNY Institute of Technology.
Justin White’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning scored Matt Yozzo for what would be the winning run, capping Whitestown’s three run, three hit, game changing inning.
Whitestown’s Mike Jardieu gave WP Manager, Paul Engelhart, and his young team a very strong outing on the mound, pitching the complete game victory.
Jardieu allowed two runs, neither earned, on just five hits, while striking out 8 and walking just three.
New Hartford Post, 1376 (1-1), got on the board first on this Father’s Day when Cooper Deck led off the game by reaching first on a dropped fly ball in the outfield.
Deck later scored on an RBI double off the bat of Connor Manderson, giving New Hartford a quick 1-0 advantage after one inning.
New Hartford’s Mark Chanatry went all 7 innings for his club today.
The crafty, veteran right hander allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, striking out 2 and walking 3 in the loss.
New Hartford took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, when Vinny Maugeri drew a lead off walk, reached second on a fielder’s choice, and then scored on a long RBI double from Brian Verbickas.
After Whitestown grabbed the lead back in the home half of the 5th, Jardieu worked flawlessly on the mound in the final two innings, facing just six batters, striking out three of them and not allowing a baserunner in the final two frames.
Whitestown, (1-3, 4-5) after winning the last two District V Championships and a New York State Championship in 2011, is in the midst of a rebuilding period.
