The Harlem Superstars Comedy Basketball Team Is Coming
To Whitesboro High School

The Whitesboro High School Class of 2013 will be hosting some very special guests on Monday, March 5, 2012 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Whitesboro High School Gymnasium, 6000 Route 291, Marcy. The Harlem Superstars, a talented group of basketball entertainers who combine incredible showtime basketball skills and hilarious comedy will face the faculty and staff comprising the Whitesboro Dream Team in a game benefiting the Whitesboro Class of 2013.

Having played over 3,000 games in 19 years without a single defeat, the Harlem Superstars offer something for everyone to enjoy. Sports enthusiasts will be intrigued by the athleticism and size of the Rockets including Ricky “7 Footer” Lopes (Duquesne University).

Basketball aficionados will be dazzled by the ball-handling wizardry of Mark “Hollywood” Jones (Dayton University), satiated by the floor game of Chris “Super Chicken” Turnquist (Miles City Junior College) and left awestruck by the high flying dunks of former Harlem Globetrotter Wayne “Above & Beyond” Clark (Georgia Perimeter College).

And since this is comedy basketball, the Harlem Rockets present to you two engaging showmen. Everyone, except for maybe the referee, will enjoy the banter and ear-to-ear grin of Kevin “Showboat” Jackson. Standing 6’6” this young talent can also “lace them up” when necessary.

The Harlem Superstars incorporate the audience, especially children, into the show and are always available to meet the fans and give out autographs at halftime and after the game.

In this special event to raise money for the Whitesboro High School Class of 2013, the Whitesboro Dream Team has graciously agreed to face the Harlem Superstars.

Tickets for what promises to be a fun-filled evening for the community are available at the Whitesboro High School Main Office or at the door. Advance sale tickets are $7.00 for adults and students and $8.00 at the door. Tickets will be on sale during normal school hours from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For additional information contact the Whitesboro High School Main Office at 266-3210. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

More importantly, the Harlem Superstars will visit the Whitesboro Elementary Schools -Westmoreland Road Elementary (1:30 pm), Marcy Elementary (2:00 pm), Hart’s Hill Elementary (2:00 pm). Times are subject to change. In addition to participating in over 150 games a year, the Superstars conduct assemblies at over 600 schools per year. One of the beliefs of the Harlem Superstars is to promote the positives of school to students. The half-hour presentation will emphasize education, respecting others, anti-bullying, setting goals, working hard, listening to parents and teachers, character building, peer pressure, and staying away from drugs and alcohol. Their presentation corresponds with the mission of the Whitesboro Central School District.

SECTION III ATHLETICS TO HOST SPORTS OFFICIALS RECRUITMENT FAIR:

Fans of high school and junior high school sports can get into the game as a certified Section III sport official.

Section III Athletics will host a free Sports Officials Recruitment Fair from 6-8 p.m. March 5th, 2012 in the NYSUT building – 4983 Brittonfield Parkway in East Syracuse.

Section III Athletics — the governing body for high school sports in Central and Northern New York— is seeking men and women who are interested in officiating all sports, especially junior high school and junior varsity games. Candidates must be high school graduates age 18 or older.

We really need officials,” said Barry Lippencott, a Central NY Officials’ representative and a scholastic football official for 39 years. “Frankly, our officiating staff is getting a little bit older, and we need to attract younger people and get them involved in our organization.

Officiating can be very rewarding and a worthwhile part-time job, depending on one’s level of commitment.”

To become a registered Section III official, an individual must demonstrate knowledge of sports rules by passing an officials test. The candidate also must submit background clearances to their local BOCES.

The recruitment fair gives men and women an excellent opportunity to discuss officiating with representatives of junior high and high school officials organizations in the region.

In Central and Northern New York, about 2,400 registered officials are organized in more than 45 chapters serves the 108 different school districts.

For more information, e-mail one of the following: Barry Lippencott at Buck53@vsubtphoto.com; Jim Verette at jverrett@twcny.rr.com or John Rathbun, Section III Executive Director at jrathbun@section3.com.

Admission to the recruitment fair on March 5th is free. Visitor parking is available behind the NYSUT building.
