UC FIRES 344 ON SECOND DAY OF E8 CHAMPIONSHIPS
New Hartford, NY (9-22-13) – The Utica College men’s golf team fired a 344 on day two of the Empire 8 Golf Championships at the Yahnundasis Golf Club Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers totaled a 689 over the first two rounds and are currently in eighth place. UC was led by local natives, junior captain Christian Leogrande (New Hartford, NY/Notre Dame) and sophomore Charles Coppola (Utica, NY/Whitesboro), who finished just one stroke apart.
Utica returns to the course, following a bye-week, on Saturday Oct. 5th when it heads to Macedon, NY for the 2013 ECAC Upstate Championships. The two-round tournament will take place at Blue Heron Hills Country Club and will be hosted by St. John Fisher College.
Leogrande guided the Pioneers on day one with a team-low round of 83 while Coppola finished with an 82 on day two, placing first for UC. Leogrande totaled a 167 over th
e first 36-holes and is currently in 30th place. Coppola is tied in 31st place with a 168 as he carded scores of 86 and 82.
Sophomores Ryan Stalker (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) and Robert Broccoli (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) shot mirror rounds of 88 and 89 on both days totaling a 177 and are in a share of 40th place. Senior Matt Dziekan struck an 89 on day two carding his best score as a Pioneer over three tournaments.
Fisher currently sits atop the standings with a two-round total of 606, nine strokes ahead of Scranton in second place. Host Elmira carded a 308 in the second round to pull with three strokes of Scranton and 12 of the lead as they are in third with a 618. Susquehanna University holds fourth with a 620 while Stevens totaled a 634 and is presently fifth, Moravian occupies sixth place with a 645 while Naz is in seventh with 666 and UC rounding out the standings with a 689.
The final two rounds of the Empire 8 Championships will take place Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19th at the Hershey Country Club in Hershey, PA.
STALKER CARDS CAREER-BEST 78-IN GOLF SEASON OPENER
Sophomore Ryan Stalker (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) of the Utica College men’s golf team struck a career-best 78 Sunday at
the Utica College Fall Invitational at Skenandoa Golf Club. UC turned in a 340 as a four-man team placing ninth overall.
Scranton University took home the hardware as they struck an impressive 294 behind medalist Grant Gulick’s round of 68, just one shy of the course record 67. Stevens Institute of Technology trailed in second with a 302, marking its lowest round in years. SUNY Cobleskill placed third with a 302 followed by Elmira in fourth with a score of 308.
Stalker, from nearby Sauquoit, NY, moved his way up the lineup to the No. 2 spot after a solid freshman campaign. He turned in a 39 on the front and back as he posted his best outing as a Pioneer.
Junior captain Christian Leogrande (New Hartford, NY/Notre Dame) finished second for UC in the third spot with an 86, shooting 83 on the front and back. Sophomore standout Charles Coppola (Utica, NY/Whitesboro) carded an 84 in his second year debut as he struggled in the lead group. Coppola was Utica’s low-man in almost every tournament last year as a freshman and looks to get back on track for another stellar campaign.
The Pioneers return to the course next weekend as they journey to Canton, NY for the St. Lawrence University Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole tournament will be held at the St. Lawrence University Golf Course. Saturday’s round is set to start at 1 p.m. while Sunday is set for 8 a.m.
