Moskal, Barnes also win divisions at Twin Ponds

8/5

NEW YORK MILLS – Doug DeCarlo didn’t think his 73 was good enough to win Sunday’s 3rd Annual Valley Amateur at Twin Ponds.

A gusting breeze and occasional showers made it hold up as DeCarlo edged Joe Kasprzyk by one stroke for the victory.

“I just played smart today,” said DeCarlo, who won the 2009 Rome City-Amateur for one of his other notable local victories.

DeCarlo, who just last week missed out on a playoff by one stroke at the U.S. Amateur Public Links qualifier at Sheridan Park in Buffalo, kept his cool Sunday when he needed it most.

“My misses were bad all day. I hit several shots in the trees. But when I did, I just tried to make par.”

DeCarlo had it going on the front, posting a 1-under 34, but ran into trouble early on his closing nine.

“I was 3-over after a few holes on the back and I hung in there,” DeCarlo said. “I made a 10-foot par save on 16 and then parred both 17 and 18.”

John Migliore, the 2011 Valley Amateur champion, finished two strokes back with a 75.

Jeff LaGase, Shawn Fulmer, Anthony Spiridigloizzi Jr., and Dante Migliore tied for fourth after posting 76.

In the Seniors Division, Pete Moskal posted a 76 to beat Jim Derella and Nick Napoli by four strokes.

Roy Barnes shot 78 to repeat as Super Seniors champion. He edged Lewis Neveu by a stroke.

Barnes also won the Super Duper Seniors (Over 70) at the Utica City-Amateur at Valley View Golf Course on July 22.
